Table Lights

The story:

In 2015-2016, a small collection of table lamps with raw materials wood and metal was designed and implemented. They had unified electrical wiring and CE certification based on European standards (EN 60598-1: 2015, EN 60598-2-4:1997). The control and certification was carried out in Greece by the company Labor S.A.

Walnut, beech and oak wood were chosen as raw materials and combined with metal alloys (2.5 mm sheets) and metal parts that all together completed the design structure.

The wooden forms were worked by hand with small tools and their surface was treated in such a way that it could be painted with metallic paint.

The entire structure of the light fixtures was painted with metallic paint and finished with metallic varnish.

Their design was special and varied and they belonged to the category of decorative lighting fixtures.

The approach:

We created 8 table lamps in which their morphology was initially designed. The final look and aesthetics of the object was determined by the form of the material (from the form of the wood), which itself guided us, working and shaping its form. Combined with the ergonomic function and usability, we tried to marry the raw design first form with the integrated aesthetics of the form that resulted from the material itself, offering a perfect and dynamic solution to the final structure of the object.

The finish:

In order to be able to achieve proper adhesion to the wood surface (with the metallic paint), we had to follow a specific methodology so that the result of the work would be successful:

- We worked the surface of the material with many different techniques to have a smooth surface.
- We closed the pores of the wood with sprayed metal putty.
- We painted the surface with a primer.
- We passed the metallic paint in combination with pearl paint.
- In the last coat we passed metallic varnish.
- In between, we sanded the surface several times, to achieve a uniform work result.

The result:

We have created a small series of lamps with the logic of a handmade object with the following characteristics:

- High quality raw materials.
- Grouped electrical structure.
- Easy and ergonomic operation.
- CE certification based on European standards.
- Perfect and harmonious finish of high strength.
- Differentiated morphology design approach.
- Combination of wood and metal with the aim of a unified and homogeneous object.

In the next collections we will follow the same philosophy by combining additional materials such as marble, brass, aluminum and glass.

Table lamp – Definition and its parts:

It basically refers to an electrical device that provides lighting through an electric bulb.

This device consists of different parts that allow it to work properly and there are different types in different designs that provide local lighting on a table or a desk or having a decorative application inside the space.

The parts of the luminaire are:

Base: It is the lower part of the lighting body and serves to provide stability and balance to the lamp, while at the same time it can also have a decorative use, complementing the aesthetics of its overall design. Metal, ceramic, glass or plastic is usually used as raw material.

Body: The body is the middle part of the lamp that connects the base to the lampshade. Different materials can frame its structure and its design can be simple or complex. . The body of a lamp can also provide a certain decorative aesthetic and thus define its design approach and image. Most of the time it contains the electrical wiring that powers the lamp inside.

Harp: The harp is a metal frame that holds the lampshade in place. It fits into the lamp socket and extends over and above the lamp. The harp is adjustable and can be moved up or down to adjust the height of the lampshade.

Lampshade: The lampshade is the part of the lamp that covers the lamp and diffuses the light. It can be made of various materials such as fabric, glass or paper and can be plain or decorated. Shades come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from classic drum shades to elaborate tiered designs.

Finial: The finial is a decorative knob that sits above the lampshade and holds it in place. It is usually made of metal, wood or glass and is screwed to the harp. The finial can be a simple shape, such as a ball or cylinder, or it can be a decorative element, such as a sculpted figure or animal.

Lamp: It is the part of the lamp that produces light. Incandescent, LED or fluorescent lamps are usually used in the tables, depending on the type of lamp and the lighting effect we want to give the room.

Bulb Socket: The socket is the part that holds the bulb. It is usually made of metal, ceramic or plastic with a screw thread for easy replacement of the bulb when it burns out.

Switch: The switch is the part that turns the light bulb on or off. It is usually located on its base or on a separate cable that connects to the outlet. Many fixtures also have dimmer switches that regulate the brightness of the light.

Harp: The harp is a metal frame that holds the lampshade in place. It fits into the lamp socket and extends over and above the lamp. The harp is adjustable and can be moved up or down to adjust the height of the lampshade.

Cord: The cord is the electrical wire that runs from the base of the lamp to the outlet. It can be covered with fabric or plastic and can be braided or twisted. The cable includes a plug at one end and a socket at the other end that connects to the electrical wiring of the lamp

Plug: The plug is the part of the cable that connects to the outlet. It is usually made of plastic and includes two or three serrations that fit into the outlet. The plug may also include a ground pin for added safety.
